The University of Western States began as a Chiropractic College in 1904, becoming the second oldest in the world. It gained regional accreditation in 1986 and expanded into Integrative Health programs, including the clinical mental health counseling program launched in 2018.

Dr. Amy Ohana leads the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. She holds a counseling PhD from Oregon State, is a published author, and is an expert in several topics. She also holds a professional counseling license in Oregon and is a nationally certified counselor and approved clinical supervisor.

UWS offers a Master's and an Educational Doctorate that prepare students for counseling licensure. The Educational Doctorate also prepares students for certification as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP).

The Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling prepares students for counseling licensure and careers in mental health treatment. Starting this spring, UWS will offer certification in Rehabilitation Counseling, requiring a master's degree and state licensure. The curriculum is 30 credits and is not currently eligible for financial aid.
